Could You Work in an Office?

by Daria Steigman on February 15, 2011

Workshifting, Independent Thinking, Steigman CommunicationsCould you work in an office?

In my latest post for Workshifting.com, I look at what it means to work on your own terms. And whether those of us who do so, whether as business owners or part of a corporate virtual team, could go back to the 9-to-5 routine of the traditional office environment.

Here’s my perspective:

I’m a business owner… I have multiple clients, and I need the flexibility to schedule both client work and all the other activities that come with running a business. I might work a lot of hours, but they’re my hours.

What’s your take? Read the full post, and then share your thoughts. There’s some pretty good discussion already in the comments.

Is Your Office Space Optimized?

by Daria Steigman on January 25, 2011

Workshifting, Independent Thinking, Steigman Communications llcWhere we work matters. If we’re comfortable. If there’s natural light. If we’re not tripping over power cords.

I have a funky Target-designed surge protector in my living room. It’s cute, it’s functional, and it gives me a safe place to plug in a laptop. But, until the other day, it was located in exactly the wrong place.

My latest post for Workshifting.com is up, and it’s all about using your office space wisely. Can you reach the calculator, paper, printer, pens, phone, and everything else you use multiple times a day without tripping over anything?

Read the post for my tips on how to make your workspace work for you. What tips would you add?

Jumpstarting Your Workshifting Day

by Daria Steigman on January 13, 2011

Macrowikinomics, Entrepreneurship, Business, Workshifting | Independent Thinking | Steigman Communications, llcPeople seem to envy those of us who don’t work out of corporate offices because we get to set our hours and select our work settings. But what often gets lost is that we, too, have to have a routine. Otherwise, how would we ever get anything done?

My latest post for Workshifting.com discusses four tips (including dealing with distractions and tackling tough tasks) for jumpstarting your day. Check it out, and add your two cents in the comments.

Bonus Reading: My review of Macrowikinomics is now up on the Entrepreneurs’ Organization blog. A quick excerpt:

Macrowikinomics is that rare business book that’s big, meaty, and worth pouring over. The authors point out that “small companies can have many of the same capabilities as large companies without the main liabilities—bureaucracy, legacy cultures, antiquated systems, and old ways of working… As more small firms exploit the Web for new resources, they can gain unprecedented access to global markets previously enjoyed by only the largest corporations.”

My bottom line: Macrowikinomics is a book about innovation and a must-read for entrepreneurs. The complete book review is here.

Mapping Your Community

by Daria Steigman on December 29, 2010

Workshifting, Community | Independent Thinking | Steigman Communications, llcIf you have ever worked for or with a nonprofit, then at some point you have probably gone through a community mapping exercise. Have you done the same for your business?

My latest Workshifting.com blog post is out, and it’s all mapping your community:

We think about community in many ways. Our family and friends. Our colleagues. Our online circles. But there’s also our workshifting community, the network of small business owners, independents, home office denizens, and others in our proximity with resources and know-how who can help us out in a pinch.

Read the complete post here. And then take a minute this holiday season to thank your workshifting community for all they do for you.

Can You Keep a Secret?

by Daria Steigman on November 2, 2010

Workshifting, Entrepreneur | Independent Thinking | Steigman Communications, llcCan you keep a secret, or are you indiscriminately telling all?

Whether you’re a full-time workshifter or you just take the occasional business call while watching your son’s t-ball game or standing in line waiting for a latte, you need to be mindful of not sharing your life with strangers. There’s been a lot of discussion about privacy in a personal context–but what about the business context?

From client strategy to personnel changes to office gossip, people all too often are sharing competitive intelligence without any regard as to whether you just might know who or what they’re talking about or can track it down with a few clicks of a mouse. Check out my latest Workshifting.com post for things to think about the next time you’re working outside the office.

I also have a new post on BOLD Business, the Entrepreneurs’ Organization’s new blog. If you haven’t read Mitch Joel‘s Six Pixels of Separation but are thinking about it, here’s my book review.
