Thanksgiving and Small Business Saturday

by Daria Steigman on November 25, 2010

Small Business Saturday | Independent Thinking | Steigman Communications, llcIt’s Thanksgiving Day across the United States.

For many of us, Thanksgiving Day  is an opportunity to take a needed “time out” to pause and spend time with family and friends. And give thanks for the food on our tables, the roofs over our heads, and the fact that we get to spend a day doing little more than eating, drinking, and watching football.

This holiday weekend also sees the launch of a new initiative to support small businesses: Small Business Saturday. With all the time we spend at big box retailers, it’s a good reminder to also support local businesses.

Anita Campbell has a good primer on Small Business Saturday over on her blog. It’s worth the read. Oh, and Happy Thanksgiving.

Water is Life

by Daria Steigman on October 15, 2010

Water | Blog Action Day 2010 | Independent Thinking | Steigman Communications, llcToday is Blog Action Day, and the topic is water.

There were some terrific suggested blog post topics, from poverty to pollution to water wars. And I’m confident that bloggers around the globe will tackle all of them. But I wanted to write about something closer to home.

I grew up largely in West Africa. I carry the indelible image of a Hausa tribesman too far south, walking his painfully thin cow to market in the midst of a drought. I saw lots of people living without access to clean water.  Heck, every time the power went out in Lagos (and occasionally we were talking days, not hours), the only reason we had running water was because our tank was on the roof.

We boiled water everywhere. My parents still boil water, and they now live right outside Washington, D.C. I filter water for ice and cooking, and lean toward bottled water for drinking.

To this day, I turn off the water when I’m brushing my teeth, cut the tap when I’m scrubbing dishes.

One of  the coolest projects I know is PlayPumps.

We need water for food. For sanitation. To keep our bodies alive. We need more smart entrepreneurs to put our 21st century brains to work making clean water available to all.

Water is life. And too many people don’t have this lifeline.

Labor Day 2010

by Daria Steigman on September 6, 2010

Labor Day 2010 | Independent Thinking | Steigman Communications, llcIt’s Labor Day in America. A day when, ironically, most of us get a rare day off from work.

To celebrate Labor Day, here’s a brief excerpt from “Every Blessed Day.” It’s an amazing poem from Philip Levine‘s award-winning What Work Is:

Waiting at the corner he feels
the cold at his back and stamps
himself awake again. Seven miles
from the frozen, narrow river.
Even before he looks he knows
the faces on the bus, some
going to work and some coming back…

In a few minutes he will hold
his time card above a clock,
and he can drop it in
and hear the moment crunching
down, or he can not,
for either way the day will last
forever. So he lets it fall.

Rolling With the Punches

by Daria Steigman on August 3, 2010

Rolling with the Punches | Independent Thinking | Steigman Communications, llcSometimes being a small business owner is easy. You have a To Do list–and you execute it to perfection. Then there are times that remind you to have a sense of humor and roll with the punches.

I have a killer post on my first impressions of the real-time Web. Trust me, it’s really good. But for 3 days (and still counting), WordPress has decided to go all glitchy on me. Apparently the software’s not fond of real time. So WordPress 3.0.1 keeps failing to update. One great post is in limbo. I’m getting random “gnarly 404″ messages.

I’m working on it, and hopefully I’ll have the back-end functionality fully restored soon. Meanwhile, I’m going to make progress on some of the other items on my To Do list. And maybe go for a run.
