Penny--It sounds like you are planning, just not on paper. (Which is often my approach as well.) Because clearly you're evaluating opportunities based on how they mesh with your skills and expertise, and how they might expand your long-term business prospects. But I'm guessing those opportunities aren't falling in your lap (that would be too easy :)) , so it is presumably based on your business acumen and your approach to networking and business development. And great point about trusting your instincts; I think too often we underestimate the importance of this in making business decisions.

I am a well-organized person who likes to plan ahead so developing and following through on a business plan always seems to make sense. But it has never worked for me in practice. I have been offered work that suits my skills and experience but that I would never have thought to include in a business plan. So, instead of developing a plan, I evaluate the work that I'm doing and that I'm being offered and make sure that it is in line with my interests and my abilities. I trust my instincts, but I also try to push the envelope and develop new skills by accepting unexpected, but interesting, opportunities.
