(Which is often my approach as well.) Because clearly you're evaluating opportunities based on how they mesh with your skills and expertise, and how they might expand your long-term business prospects. But I'm guessing those opportunities aren't falling in your lap (that would be too easy :)) , so it is presumably based on your business acumen and your approach to networking and business development. But it has never worked for me in practice. I have been offered work that suits my skills and experience but that I would never have thought to include in a business plan. So, instead of developing a plan, I evaluate the work that I'm doing and that I'm being offered and make sure that it is in line with my interests and my abilities. I trust my instincts, but I also try to push the envelope and develop new skills by accepting unexpected, but interesting, opportunities.
