Beth: Excellent point about the lack of a social media mindset. The question then becomes whether LinkedIn is the right place for community building. I think we're in a "chicken or the egg" quandry: while I'd like to see more robust discussion forums, I'm not prepared to expend my energy in pushing for it here.

Daria, glad you pointed this out. I have joined a lot of LinkedIn groups but haven't been that active some of which is attributed to the reasons you listed. I also see a lot of the 'seeking free advice' in the Q&A section too. I think there's still a mindset that LinkedIn is just a tool for sales and there isn't really a social media mindset for community building. Hopefully that will change, but I tend to doubt it. It will be interesting for sure to see how it trends in 2009.

Happy New Year to you and yours!
